Avengers: Sound
PREP Watch the first 10 minutes (after the title sequence is over) of The Avengers on Clickview. Analyse how sound is used in the extract to create meaning. You can use any part of the opening scenes - both the opening scene at the seaside at Little Bazeley or the scene in Emma Peel's flat
Sound analysis:
The opening scene is set in by the sea side. There is non-diegetic music playing, lightly in the back. There is also diegetic sounds, such as seagulls and waves. These diegetic sounds make the viewer feel immersed. It also adds a sense of reality to the show.
when we are introduced to Emma Peel, the audience is greeted with light and upbeat music. This shows the audience that Emma is a good person and helps build a good relationship between Emma and the audience.
You identify terminology correctly (diegetic sound) and the meaning it creates (realism and immersion). You comment thoughtfully on the effect of the upbeat (non-diegetic) music on the audience as Peel is introduced.
